Before Nickelodeon Germany ever existed, a television special, called "Nickelodeon Goes to Germany", aired June 25, 1995 on MTV Germany (which was currently MTV Europe), featuring short snippets from the pilot episodes of Nickelodeon's shows that children would expect a week later. The special can currently be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTR9XpgCLVg.
The original version of Nickelodeon was launched on July 2, 1995 as a block on VH1 Germany. Nickelodeon was on the air from 6:00AM until 8:00PM, when VH1 took over.
Nickelodeon closed on June 1, 1998, due to advertising problems and competition with Der Kinderkanal, and was replaced with MTV2 Pop.
From March 30, 2010 German speaking Nickelodeon adopted the international Nickelodeon Branding on-air, online and offline. Nick Germany was renamed Nickelodeon Germany (although some previous idents said Nickelodeon) and Nickelodeon Premium was rebranded NickToons.
From June 1, 2011, Nickelodeon Germany will start broadcasting in HD.
An Austrian version of Nick is also broadcast, sharing time with an Austrian version of Viva. Programming is identical to the German version, other than commercials and promotions.
A Swiss version of Nick for German-speaking viewers began on April 1, 2009, sharing time with a Swiss version of Viva. Originally, it was a block on SF2.
